In my typography class we put together a collective pop up type museum. We had no limits as to what our contribution to the exhibit was. In my instance I wanted to display how typography will be influenced by future technologies in the form of augmented reality (also called AR).
I wanted to contrast this future tech with low-fi signage, it gives the AR an added punch when you’re not expecting something high fedelity. I made the signs out of cardboard where I would smother it in glue to warp the graphics I placed on top to add to the thrown together look. Hand-lettered instructions was another component, which gave the signs the personality of home-made. To interact with the scenes you would scan QR codes which would generate the experience. For the AR to generate it needed to detect vertical planes which was a function of the sign’s design. They would give something the phone to find in order to generate.
As a give away from the exhibit I created postcards that could project the logo. By scanning the QR code on the back you would be able to project this logo by finding the image on the front. It did this by image tracking, specificly seeking out this front graphic.
Here’s a short demo of the exhibit. It features different functionalities such as proximity and tap triggers.
